I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord. ~ Psalms 27:13
There are circumstances in our lives that can hold us captive. We can be captivated by pain, disappointments, and hardships. What does that mean? Well, our concentration can be so focused on what we’re going through, what we’re experiencing in the moment that we can’t see anything else. Our thoughts and emotions are imprisoned to this thing, it has our attention.
I have experienced this truth as I cope with the loss of my husband, Charles. We were married for 15 years. He died unexpectedly and it has turned my world upside down to say the least. There are days when I don’t want to get up. I’m paralyzed by the pain I’m in. Yet, I still have hope. I’m so grateful to our heavenly Father for His Word and promises that we can hold onto in the midst of our sorrows. He won’t let us fall. There’s safety in Him.
Numbers 21 shares the story of the Israelites who after they had come out of captivity, complained about their circumstances and was stricken by a snake bite. The remedy was they had to look up to live. They had to take their eyes off of what was happening in their bodies to the solution God had provided in His mercy. We too, have to remind ourselves to look up. Don’t look down on yourself, look UP. God knew about these challenges we’d face in this life and He made provisions and gave us solutions. He’s such an awesome Father! With His help we can face the adversities of this life.
We’re not alone in these experiences. In the above text, David, the man after God’s own heart, declared he had come close to fainting, to giving up, But…. He believed and held on. It’s okay to get weary, to cry sometimes. This pandemic has been a wilderness experience for many. Isolated from family and friends. We have to hold on the promises of God. There are many stories in the bible of individuals that faced seemingly unsurmountable circumstances but they too believed and saw the demonstration of God’s power. The three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:24-26), Paul in prison (Acts 16:25-34), Mary and Martha’s brother, Lazarus, in the grave (John 11:38-44). We also can look back over our lives and remember the testimonies of how God has intervened. All these things worked towards helping us get to the other side of our healing, breakthrough or whatever was needed. We can go from pain to hope. We can trust that there are brighter days ahead. And we can have joy in our trials. Don’t die in the wilderness…look up and live.
Let this word encourage your hearts today, if you’re going through a rough season. Know that God hasn’t forgotten about you and He is faithful to every word in His Word.
Until next time…
